How Virginia Paycheck Taxes Work
Your Virginia paycheck is your gross salary minus federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and Virginia state income tax. This calculator applies the 2024 federal and Virginia rules to estimate your net (take-home) pay per pay period and per year, plus your effective tax rate.
Enter your annual gross salary, choose your pay frequency (annual, monthly, biweekly or weekly), and select your filing status (Single or Married filing jointly).

Federal Taxes
Federal income tax is progressive. For 2024 the standard deduction is $14,600 (Single) or $29,200 (Married filing jointly), and the remaining taxable income is taxed across the 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37% brackets — each rate applying only to income inside its band.
FICA payroll taxes also apply: Social Security at 6.2% on the first $168,600 of 2024 wages, and Medicare at 1.45% on all wages, with an extra 0.9% Additional Medicare surtax on wages above $200,000 (this threshold rises to $250,000 for married filing jointly).
Virginia State Income Tax
Virginia uses a graduated income tax for 2024 with four brackets running from 2% to a top rate of 5.75%. Tax applies to Virginia taxable income — your gross pay minus the Virginia standard deduction, which rose for 2024 to $8,500 (Single) or $17,000 (MFJ).
The brackets are 2% on the first $3,000, 3% from $3,000 to $5,000, 5% from $5,000 to $17,000, and 5.75% above $17,000. Unusually, those dollar thresholds are the same for single and married filers — Virginia does not widen its brackets for joint returns. Because the top rate starts at just $17,000 of taxable income, virtually every full-time worker pays 5.75% on the bulk of their pay, so the state effectively behaves like a near-flat 5.75% tax above the deduction.
Worked Example
A single filer earning $70,000 in Virginia:
- Federal taxable income = $70,000 − $14,600 = $55,400
- Federal income tax ≈ $7,241
- Social Security (6.2%) = $4,340
- Medicare (1.45%) = $1,015.00
- Virginia taxable = $70,000 − $8,500 = $61,500; Virginia income tax ≈ $3,279
- Total tax ≈ $15,875 → Net pay ≈ $54,125/year (about $4,510/month)
- Effective tax rate ≈ 22.7%

Frequently asked questions
Does Virginia have a state income tax?+
Yes. Virginia charges a graduated state income tax for 2024 with four brackets from 2% up to a top rate of 5.75%. The top 5.75% rate applies to taxable income above 17,000 dollars, so most workers reach it quickly.
What is the Virginia income tax rate for 2024?+
Virginia's 2024 rates are 2%, 3%, 5% and 5.75%, applied progressively. The brackets are 2% on the first 3,000 dollars, 3% to 5,000 dollars, 5% to 17,000 dollars, then 5.75% above 17,000 dollars — the same dollar thresholds for single and married filers.
How much is taken out of my paycheck in Virginia?+
A single filer earning 70,000 dollars a year pays roughly 7,241 dollars in federal income tax, 4,340 dollars in Social Security, 1,015 dollars in Medicare and about 3,279 dollars in Virginia income tax — leaving roughly 54,125 dollars net, or about 4,510 dollars per month.
What is the Virginia standard deduction for 2024?+
Virginia raised its 2024 standard deduction to 8,500 dollars for single filers and 17,000 dollars for married couples filing jointly. The deduction reduces the income that Virginia's 2%–5.75% brackets are applied to.
Why do most Virginians pay the 5.75% top rate?+
Virginia's brackets are very compressed — the top 5.75% rate begins at just 17,000 dollars of taxable income. Once you clear that, every additional dollar is taxed at 5.75%, so the state behaves close to a 5.75% flat tax for most full-time earners.
